Sometimes life just hurts. Sometimes its not quite a sudden slap in the face or a punch to the gut. I'm talking about those times when all you feel is that slow churning of the soul that just doesn’t let up no matter how many good intentions or willpower you have in you and it takes everything in you just to get out of bed. Yeah, those days.

Of all my tactics and remedies for this the only one that has had a true lasting effect was self care. Pure, unadulterated, unlimited, shameless, radical self love and self care. Below you will find my Self Care kit that may help any time you feel like this. Hopefully you find something you can use <

Self Care Kit

This is a list of things to keep handy when you find yourself in a depressive episode or feeling really down to the point you can’t get out of bed. These things can at least ease your soul and make you more comfortable.

1. Rubber Hot water bottle – Sometimes heat can generate feelings of comfort as it will soothe the body and any achy muscles that could add to your mood.

2. Fantasy novel – If you’re a reader it could benefit you to find a book you really want to read

3. One never before seen episode from your favorite show – This is super fun, I am one of those people who will watch an entire season of something on Netflix and then get mad when its over so what I will do is find a show that isn’t progressive (like a sitcom or something that doesn’t progress over the season) and save one random episode of it and do not watch it until you’re having a bad day. I currently have the last episode of Firefly waiting for me still.

4. Money for pizza or favorite snacks- I’m definitely not going to be your nutritionist here. Sometimes you have to give your taste buds what it wants. Gratification and pleasure are key goals here. As long as its not going to throw you too far off of your diet and make you feel bad the day after. In that case, figure out a fruit or veggie that you really like and get that instead. I have a weakness for grapefruits, watermelon and pomegranates.

5. An arsenal of funny memes to look over. I tend to follow memes and I find them hilarious. My favorite one to follow is doge. (much funny. very wow.) You could try googling meme and whatever your interests are to find some good ones.

6. Songs that either calm and sooth your soul or make you feel understood. If you’re up to it , inspirational songs can help change your mood but if you’re simply not feeling it, being understood can be just as comforting. You can make a playlist on Youtube or Spotify or if you want to find new stuff you can try Pandora.

7. Body massager. You could be as fancy as a wand or as simple and cheap as a rolling pin. Whatever works.

8. Muscle relaxer cream – again for those sore or achy parts

9. Good smelling stuff – aromatherapy is good because sometimes I can find scents that remind me of favorite places and good times. At the very least it can be a pleasant distraction. Exercise caution with candles.

10. Nail polish – the color orange always gives me energy, purple or blue based colors soothe me. Experiment; see what colors have an effect on you.

11. Warm fuzzy blanket – because why not

12. Huge stuffed teddy bear- also because why not.

13. Teas, drinks (lets put the vodka down on this one and pick up some juice, fruit infused water or even soda ^_^

14. Sweater , a warm comfy loveable sweater , If already hot outside ,then some fuzzy slippers or even a cute hat. – This is your time to embrace ridiculousness, so yes, go for the giant panda hat with the ears.

15. A journal – so you can write and dump your brain onto the paper or ya know.. doodle.

Feel free to keep lying around within reach of your bed or in a box in your closet :)

Hope this helps! Take care of yourselves, beautiful people

– Ciera
