I just signed up for my first dance class! How do I prepare?

Hey there!

If you're reading this you may have just signed up for a class (probably on impulse) and are not really sure what to expect or what to do next. You may be feelings some butterflies or slight nervousness and are trying to find out as much as you can about the experience.

Well you've stumbled upon just the right blog for that! :)

I have compiled a list of tips over the years of both being a student and teacher that will make you walk in the door feeling like a pro.

1. Get to know the style of dance

If it is a widely known style such as Jazz or Belly Dance it should be easy to research the style and watch some videos to become familiar with it. Learn a bit about the history and some prominent figures in the community. If there are reliable sources you may be able to find a Youtube video demonstrating some basic moves or a warm up for the style. If you can find them, feel free to watch them and learn a thing or two, just be careful to not become to attached to the way you execute the movements as it is always best to solidify your knowledge of dance moves inside the classroom to ensure accuracy.

2. Get to know the instructor

Most instructors will have a blurb about them and at least a few videos of their choreography online. Feel free to poke through and read about them, their background and philosophy and become a fan! They may have videos of past routines at the level you will be taking to give their students an idea of what is in store for them. If you come across an advanced video in the mix, don't worry and don't get freaked out. They may just be showing higher levels for reference of where their students can go if they continue with classes.

3. Pay close attention to the location and plan your commute accordingly. Plan to be there 10-15 mins early. When you look up the studio find it on google earth and select street view so you can have an idea of what it looks like. Pay attention to parking options or public transportation and add this in your plan as well. Do whatever is necessary to be sure you will arrive early.

4. Check out any FAQ section on the studio or instructor's website speaking on attire, or studio policies. You may find that they only allow non-street shoes (this means a separate pair of non-scuff shoes for in-studio only that you do not wear outside. This is an effort to keep the floors clean and free of debris and scratches) or that they are liberal with tops (as in they allow for sports bras to be work solo). If here are any additional questions you need cleared up feel free to call or email whoever is designated as your point of contact for the class or workshop.

5. Once you know the rules and policies feel free to shop for a new cute outfit to wear that follows the rules lined out by the studio and that you can feel good in. There is some truth to the whole "if you look you, you feel good" mantra.

6. Consider taking a stretch or cardio dance fitness class if you want to test out being in a classroom environment in a slightly easier format. This way you get your body moving, you're simply following cues and directions, and you don't have to memorize anything. This is also good because this will teach you a mini lesson in body awareness. I would do this at least 3 days before the class so you have time to take an Epsom salt bath and get rid of any lactic acid build up from the exercise.

7. Pack your bag the night before so you're sure you have everything you need.

That's it! That is all you need to do to prep for your dance class! When you get there you will learn exactly what you need to adjust, add or get rid of to prepare for the next and so on. I hope this list helped get rid of a bit of confusion and allowed you all to breathe a bit easier.

Congratulations on the beginning of your dance journey!

Take care,

Ciera Adair
